When did you become a man? That is a question that you don’t hear much. Is it because in order to ask the question, you must first either know when you became a man, or admit to yourself that you never really did.
On August 30th, 2012, my son Joseph Caruthers, became a man. Not because of anything he did, but because the men in the Body of Christ told him he was. We had what is called a Rite of Passage ceremony where respected men gathered and welcomed Joseph into the world of men. They stood and announced that they commit themselves to training him in what it means to be a man. They wrote him letters explaining what Biblical manhood really means. I brought Joseph forward and blessed him and prayed over him and I knighted him. That’s right I, took a 52 inch Scottish Claymore (a replica of the sword you see Mel Gibson use in the movie Braveheart), and I knight him.
Some people I have talked to have asked me how can you call a 13 year old a man? He knows nothing about being a man. I answer with a comparison to when a person first gives their life to Christ. They know nothing about what it means to be a Christian, but they are still a Christian. The learning comes after the transformation.
Anyway, it was an awesome ceremony. I was blessed by it and some of the guys there said they were too. There was also a few comments about them wanting to do this when their boys get older. I look forward to being able to help the dads plan that.
HOW THE RITES OF PASSAGE WENT DOWN
So here is the video from the ceremony. I’m sorry that it cuts off at the end. My video camera ran out of memory. I had to break it up into 5 parts because Youtube only allows 15 minute videos. The files are large because when I tried to condense them down the video quality quickly went bad. Please be patient while downloading them.
