Six of the Best Books I Read in 2017

2017 has been an amazing year for reading. I was able to take advantage of a couple really great library apps (Overdrive and Hoopla) to find a lot of interesting audiobooks to read. In fact, I read seventy-one books this year after setting a goal of fifty books on Goodreads Reading Challenge.

Also, I can’t forget to mention my favorite audiobook source, I haven’t found a more comprehensive source for audiobooks. Even books that I couldn’t find on other sources, like the unabridged versions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series. Believe it or not, you can get a FREE audiobook from Audible an absolutely no cost to you. It’s super easy. Just use this convenient affiliate link (Audible), create an account using your account, find the book you want among the over 100,000 titles, go through the ordering process using your free credit, then deactivate your membership. Doesn’t cost you a single cent and you get a free audiobook that you can access anytime by logging onto your Audible account.

Changing What I Read

I’ve been trying to find more fiction books including some classics that I’ve been wanting to read for the longest time. Something I’ve realized is that just because a book is a “classic” doesn’t mean that I will automatically enjoy it. I read Moby Dick and Murder on the Orient Express and finished them wondering why these books are considered classics.

The books I am listing below are some of my favorites among those I have read in 2017. I’m not writing reviews on these books here, but I do plan on writing reviews on some of them. That may mean that I go back and reread them. Oh darn.

Here are Six of the Best Books I Read in 2017

Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World by Michael Hyatt

This is a book for anyone who is interested in exercising their online presence for any reason. The focus of the book is for authors who are trying to get a book published, but the instruction in the book is priceless for anyone who is planning on any kind of online work. This is the book to read if you need help with starting your own website to how to manage your social media to how to interact with your audience.

Moving Mountains: Praying with Passion, Confidence, and Authority by John Eldredge

Being my favorite author, it’s no surprise that John Eldredge shows up in this list. It’s probably a safe bet that he will show up in similar lists as I reread his books often. This is John’s latest book on prayer and, like all of his books, he tries to dissect the scriptures and the great authors of the past in order to uncover deeper truths. I highly recommend this book for anyone or any ministry that is wanting to take their prayers to a more intimate level with Christ.

Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas

I found this book when I was doing a search on Overdrive for spy novels. What an amazing story. This man, as young as he was, was utterly unswerving in his faith and convictions. His rock solid faith in the truth of God’s Word and his devotion to the strengthing Christ’s church is an inspiration to my own faith and my desire to help others grow in their faith.

The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

After reading the previous book, I just had to read this one. I have heard of it from some of my friends, but now it is a must read. I’m sure this is another book I will be rereading again and again. Dietrich doesn’t pull any punches in this book. I love that. He lays the Christian faith out in a way that says if you are not willing to lay everything else down and follow Christ with everything you have, don’t even bother.

All Things New: Heaven, Earth, and the Restoration of Everything You Love by John Eldredge

Surprise! Another book by John Eldredge.

If you believe that eternity in Heaven will be spent laying on clouds playing harps and singing hymns, this book will pleasantly shatter that belief.

John cites scripture to show how at the “renewal of all things” we will be living here on Earth as Jesus the Creator originally intended for us.

The Scarlet Pimpernel by Emmuska Orczy

This is one of the classic stories that I actually enjoyed. In a nutshell, if you can picture Batman saving people from a national revolution, you have The Scarlet Pimpernel.
